Ashtanga Yoga is the system of Yoga taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India. This method of Yoga involves synchronizing the breath with progressive series of postures-a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.

In our Ashtanga Yoga class, we slowly, slowly work on the Primary Series poses with an emphasis on alignment and breath.

Fitness Funk @ Planet Funk | 6:30 pm

Ok, it's no secret that i love to dance. And it's also one of my favorite ways to workout. If you've ever been to Planet Funk with me on Saturdays, this is the same class, Fitness Funk.  Shawn Welling teaches this HipHop/Latin/Funk mix cardio class.  It's SO MUCH fun and it's $15 on thursdays and only $10 on saturdays. And don't worry if you've never taken this class before.  It is all ages and all levels.

Friday PM
073007_kardioKardio Kickboxing (Pads) @ Urban Jungle | 6:15pm

This is a similar version of the Kardio Kickboxing at Urban Jungle that i wrote about this weekend. I have not been to the Friday class but I was told it's the same as the Saturday class.  the schedule says "Pads", which i assume is a lot of punching and kicking.  If you are looking for a more traditional Cardio Kickboxing, those are on MOndays and Wednesdays at 6:15pm.

The Friday and Saturday classes are done with equipment and have more elements of boxing and karate.  Very fun, but very intense!  Read the post. If anyone wants to try this Friday class, let me know. I'm up for anything!  The Saturday class last weekend was the best workout I've ever had!

VInyasa Flow is becoming a very popular class for those who are new to flow classes. The class promises to make you sweat while you move though the series and feel your body, breath and movement become one. Jennifer's style of hatha yoga consists of a series of poses that all yoga students can enjoy.  She carefully hand-picks the type of music to be used during the class so that the routine has an energizing, gentle, graceful and inspiring flow to it. This class can be challenging for the beginner to yoga but all levels are welcome to attend.

Best Workout for a Hangover

I thought this might hit home for a few of us. Found this on a cute, healthy living newsletter i subscribe to called "The Lift."  Click here for the RSS Feed.

HungoverWhat’s the Best Workout To Do If I’m a Little Hungover?

Being balanced means keeping a fit mind and body. To solve you fitness-related conundrums, The Lift turns to Eddie Carrington, ACE, national spokesperson for Bally Total Fitness and a personal trainer at the chain’s 139 West 32nd Street location.

Question: I want to work out, but I’m feeling a bit woozy from last night’s drinks. Got any suggestions?

Says Eddie: First, don’t go to the gym—at least not right away. You don’t want to be bounding on a treadmill or heaving free weights when your motor skills aren’t together.

Instead, eat some carbs—say, a small bowl of oatmeal with raisins—then grab a bottle of water and head outside. Get in the fresh air, let the wind and the sun hit you, and just walk. Make a goal of reaching a certain street. That little bit of cardio may actually make you feel better. If so, jogging is OK, too.

When you get home, whip up some egg whites and keep drinking water.

By the afternoon, you should be ready to make a run at the gym, and do whatever workout you please.
